My desire to become a Guardian ad Litem grows from my professional experience as a lawyer (25 years representing parents) and my personal experience of raising three daughters. I now work exclusively as a GAL, both in private and child protecive cases. My main approach to this work derives from an understanding that the children of divorce who do the best are those children who have two active, caring and healthy parents regularly involved in their lives. The most important thing I feel a GAL can do is to help the parents reach an agreement as to what is best for their child and end their conflict and I work hard to accomplish this during a case. I also am an "active" GAL, in that I intervene when I see behavior by either parent that is detrimental to the child (e.g., putting the child in the middle) rather than waiting and simply documenting the misbehavior in my report. I do not hesitate to recommend coparenting services (counselors, Kids First high conflict, etc.) when parents are unable to set aside their own differences for the sake of their children. My focus is on the child and I do not worry that either parent will be upset with me if things don't go exactly as they wish. I pride myself on thorough investigations and detailed reports to the Court as well as my ability to talk to children. (I have lectured at the GAL Court training on Interviewing Children and Report Writing.)
